If you have been to a packing event, you have experienced the joy that comes with it. Somewhere between watching the video explaining the purpose, scooping the food into the bag, and getting to know your tablemates better, the feeling of a making an impact hits you. You may be wondering if there is more you can do to further along Servants with a Heart’s goals to nourish children locally and globally.
Joining the leadership team is a primary way to get more involved with a cause that you care about. Keep reading to see if taking the next step may be right for you.
You may already be a part of volunteer organizations and giving back to your community. Many of the people on our leadership team hold an assortment of leadership positions and regularly volunteer with their church, schools, and other non-profits in the Charlotte area.
Jeff Wilson, a member of the leadership team, says he is “passionate about affordable housing, homelessness, and chronic hunger.” In addition to the Servants with a Heart leadership team, he volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and Serve Charlotte’s Homeless. Jeff donates his time and resources to provide homes and meals to people in the Charlotte area. In 2014 his church hosted a packing event and it was there he met the Yohs. Jeff said, “After talking, they invited me to help them with the local distribution of the packed meals and soon after that I joined the leadership team to gain a better understanding of the organization; its mission and how it functions.”
Another reason to join the leadership team is to get to know the other members of the group. Jeff describes the makeup of the team as “young and old, women and men, with varied backgrounds and experiences.” The atmosphere of the team is “very energizing and providing food and hope to hungry people abroad and locally is extremely uplifting.”
So what does joining the leadership team of Servants with a Heart actually look like?
There are several ways you can serve. If you are connected in the community and aware of areas of need (or want to know more!) you can be a distribution coordinator, like Jeff, who figures out local distribution. You can also assist in the education and nutrition, like Cynthia Hair. She assists with packing events by “sharing the benefits of the food for the people receiving it and the importance of eating nutritionally for all.”
Cynthia joined the leadership team because Jeff and Suzanne Yoh “allow me to pursue my passion within the realms of something well-organized that is already making an impact.”
The leadership team time commitment can be as low as five hours a month and up to fifty, or going on a trip to deliver the food to another country.
So, what are you passionate about? In what ways are you being called to take the next step and make a difference through volunteering?
